We understand the trust you would need to place in your legal representative. We offer the following:

Skill
You need to be able to have confidence that your lawyer(s) can do what you hired them to do: achieve a dismissal or acquittal if possible, minimise penalties where necessary or resolve your case by negotiation. Our barristers have successfully handled hundreds of cases, including numerous trials before a jury. Most importantly, we have an excellent record of achieving positive results.

We appreciate that your case will constantly be on your mind, potentially impacting many aspects of your life. You need someone who understands and is willing to listen. We strive to respond quickly and completely to your questions, whenever you contact us.

Honesty
When you are facing a difficult situation you need a lawyer who can be honest with you about what’s ahead. We will tell you what you need to hear not necessarily what you want to hear. We are straightforward, but will also do all we can to try find the most effective resolution to your charges.

Experience
We represent clients in any court in New Zealand. We are familiar with the practices of the various criminal courts and tribunals so we can help our clients understand what to expect from start to finish. We have worked on thousands of cases including high profile matters reported in the media.

Focus and Dedication
When your freedom, reputation, financial circumstances and future are at stake, you don’t want to put your trust in someone who lacks the skills required. Our barristers have the skills required to achieve the best result possible.

Client care, fees & Instructing Solicitor information

Most work sent to our team is referred to them by solicitors.  We are often approached directly by existing and potential new clients with queries or instructions.

All barristers are required, by the regulations that govern the legal profession, to be instructed by a solicitor.  Clients generally cannot instruct a barrister directly; however, there are some exceptions.  As such, a solicitor is required to instruct one of our barristers in conjunction with the client – such a solicitor is commonly referred to as an ‘instructing solicitor’. These rules were amended from July 1st 2015 and we may be able to take direct instructions from a new or existing client; we can be contacted to discuss how this new process will work and if it is applicable to your situation.

An instructing solicitor can be a solicitor that the client uses or has used in the past for other matters. Alternatively, we can provide a new client with recommendations as to potential appropriate instructing solicitors. We are happy provide further information about this process and the associated costs, if any, on request.

Our fees range depending on the type of work and the required needs. Our barristers can charge at an hourly rate or a set fee. Both can provide you with a degree of certainty and we are more than happy to provide you with an estimate of how much time/work is involved with your case.

We are a busy practice and pride ourselves on our good reputation. We are not in this business to simply tell you what you want to hear. We will be direct and honest throughout and provide you with the right advice.

Pro bono: Our barristers do undertake a proportion of pro bono work for parties who are not entitled to legal aid. Pro bono instructions will be accepted subject to the New Zealand Law Society code of ethics relating to barristers and workload.

Retainer: We regularly request that a retainer be paid at the commencement of any new instruction as security for any work in progress. Generally, fee notes will be issued every two weeks. It is our preference that our fee notes are paid on receipt and that our retainer is returned to you once our final fee note has been paid.

The retainer is always held in a solicitor’s trust account.  As with all barristers we do not have a trust account. Your retainer cannot be accessed without your written permission, usually by way of an email approval.

Preferred payment methods: Invoice Basis; to make the process of paying as easy as possible our invoices can be paid via bank transfer or online credit card payment.
